Red Carpet Looks

Last night’s Emmy awards brought out some beautiful red carpet hair styles.  We asked Dickey to share some of his tips for award winning hair.

“When it comes to creating camera-ready red carpet hair, I always recommend classic looks over trendy styles for timelessly elegant hair that won’t look dated down the line. The best big night hair complements the dress and doesn’t compete with the starlet’s overall look, letting her true beauty shine through on camera. Prepping for your own main event at home? The same principle applies. Keep hair simple, sophisticated and polished with looks that are sure to stand the test of time.

High Impact Hair: Volume is a red carpet favorite every awards season as it translates beautifully on camera. To get the look, begin by applying a texture specific pre-blowdry cream, like Hair Rules Blow It All Out Blow-out hair until it’s about 80% dry then wrap two to three inch sections around a wide-barrel curling iron to boost volume at the root. Finish with a lightweight hairspray for lasting lift that won’t fall flat half-way through the night.

Sleek and Chic: There’s nothing sexier than strong, slicked back hair and the contrast between an ultra-feminine red-carpet dress and bold hair really pops on camera. This is one of the easiest looks to recreate at home. All you need is some styling cream—I go with our Hydrating Finishing Cream—and a hair elastic. Simply gather hair into a low pony and secure and the nape of the neck then smooth down fly-aways with your finishing cream.

Braided Beauty: Braids are a red carpet mainstay that we see reiterated season after season.  Avoid getting caught in a hair trend trap by using braids as an accent not a main feature.  For easy picture-perfect glam, start by using an appropriate styling product, like Hair Rules Wavy Mousse, which will keep hair in place without leaving it looking stiff or unnatural. Pin hair in a slightly off-center messy bun leaving a few sections loose. Braid the remaining sections and wrap unevenly around your bun, for a soft woven look. ”

What fail-safe looks do you turn to for a big night?
